Had it not been overshadowed by the passage of health care reform legislation, congressional approval of a bill overhauling the nation’s student loan program would be hailed by Democrats and the Obama administration as a great victory, and assailed by Republicans as another step toward the socialist abyss. Instead, the student loan bill slipped through Congress relatively quietly, and will be signed by President Obama this week.
